October Event: Feeling Like a Ghost

OCTOBER EVENT: FEELING LIKE A GHOST

The Storyteller did warn you: Mu is a fickle dreamscape, and it reacts very poorly to not being actively maintained at all times. So it happens that on October 10th, Mu will begin to push back against that fact that it is being neglected. And just what, might you ask, does that mean?

That, we're afraid, will become frightfully apparent.
The Past: This Time I Might Just Disappear

When you wake on the 10th, it will be to the shadow of someone else sitting beside you, of someone who was definitely not here, last you checked: a specter of a single person of great emotional significance. This person must be both physically absent from LifeAftr and be someone that, for some reason or another - not necessarily a good one - represents a lack of closure in your character's life. Someone they didn't mourn, someone they didn't grieve, someone they love, someone they cut ties with unkindly, someone who represents a chapter in their life they repress.

This specter appears to you, and only to you. While at first they will seem warped and faded, the texture of this person will gradually sharpen into greater detail, until they start to look more and more tangible. It will be as if they are really appearing in LifeAftr, piercing the veil between dimensions to join you.
So what's the catch?

For one, this specter feeds on and exacerbates the sensations of loss. They will bring every painful association to light and rub those wounds raw. For example, if taking the shape of someone important your character has lost, it will feel as if they just lost them anew. Each ghost wants to keep characters locked in emotional turmoil and under their power; they want to be acknowledged to the exclusion of all else, to an almost parasitic extent. They crave your attention, your love, your devotion, your fear. They are tethered to you, and to that which you seek to forget.

However they might have been in life, however fondly or not you may remember them, this shadow of them is merely that: a shadow. Desperate for your attention, and likely to grow jealous if you dare direct it anywhere else. They can't live without you. Why should you get to live without them?
No matter how they were as you remember them, this fervent desire to be acknowledged will culminate in the specters urging characters to "join" them, whether through death, sleep, attempting to leave LifeAftr's borders, or risking incredible danger to "find" them. They seem convinced that you can join them, as long as you take the single step necessary to do so. Yet despite how increasingly physical your ghost seems to grow, as time goes on, they will remain visible only to you.

If they manage to convince you to "join" them, be warned: this will count as a character death. And this time, the Storyteller won't be around to immediately revive you...or lessen the brunt of a death penalty. Bear in mind that there is no dispelling them, either; you simply have to outlast them. Fortunately, they'll be gone by the time the evening of the 20th rolls around...

The Present: Seen This Play Out in My Dream

Your waking days might be plagued with shadows of your past, but your dreaming days are no better.

The Storyteller will return in time for characters to find themselves drawn to the familiar campfires used for one thing - the monthly Storytelling. Those whose ghosts got the better of them will be revived in time to participate in the Storytelling. They even have new islands for you to vote for! So on the usual date and time, the evening of the 20th, you'll be taking a quick break from telling your tales... in exchange for witnessing them instead.

Boon or curse, those curious about current events on their homeworld will have the opportunity to witness public visions focused upon family, friends, locations, outcomes of dire situations, and more.
Though the length of these visions may vary, keep in mind that the projection should be relatively current; from within a year of your character's current canon point. Exam results released five months after your character arrived at LifeAftr will be accessible, for example, while those released 13 months earlier will not. The same holds true for CRAU characters curious of what they left behind, so long as the information you wish for them to collect has occurred within 12 months of the date they were dropped.

As these visions will be replacing storytelling, a new OOC template will be available on the 20th (those of you who were with us during last December's Storytelling will likely know what we mean). Visions will be limited to three per character and will be public - don't hold out on your friends, now.

After this awful night has passed, surely that means the worst is over, right?

Well...
The Future: 'Cause the World Might Do Me In

Though the Storyteller will be working hard to bring Mu back under control, extra precautions are most certainly to be taken to ensure those insidious beings of the past remain where they belong. Similar effects are imminent, however, and it might not be surprising to you at this stage to find a few additional people wandering about the place. Oh, don't worry - those specters of the past are long-gone, dispersed the night of the Storytelling.

It's not the who in this case that matters; it's the when. The polar opposite of those now returned to the past, these are far more placid echoes of your possible future. Though they cannot be seen by the person from whom they've originated, they can serve as a reflection of one of the many types of people that person may become. The eventual hero of a long war, one who's long settled into LifeAftr, and infinitely endless other possibilities. As uplifting as it may be to see someone you love happy and healthy, others may be less inspiring in the directions their lives could take.
This future version of your character should either originate from a future canon point, or a potential future you feel is likely within LifeAftr - though do keep in mind that these future characters will be unable to share any answers about LifeAftr's mysteries than what has already been discovered. Also bear in mind that, just like the case with the specters of the past, only one projection of a possible future will be possible. What kind of projection that is - happy, sad, bittersweet, or anything else - is up to you!

As of the 25th, these strange, future echoes will also fade, finally leaving the islanders at peace. Well, at whatever passes for "at peace" around here. We do hope your trauma is at relatively manageable levels.
Conclusion: Maybe There's No Guarantee

An event log will be going up on the 10th, and the Storytelling on the 20th! We'll also look into getting a secondary event log up on the 25th for the future part of the event, if there's enough interest.

In the meantime, feel free to use this post for questions and assorted event plotting!
