It took me a bit to figure out how to word this, and I may be the only person who feels this way. But I'm uncomfortable enough that I figured it's worth saying something.
I understand that the Roaka are a fictional species, and that this is all part of their fictional life cycle. However, the sacrifice of the "weak and elderly" is not a fictional issue. Elderly people are still murdered in parts of the world for no reason other than their age. (See thalaikoothal in India, for starters.) As for "weak" … I don't know how to interpret this other than 'physically or mentally weak,' which slams straight into the issue of ableism either way.
Content warnings about ageism, senicide, and possibly ableism would've been appreciated. Personally, I would've preferred an event that didn't include these things at all due to the ongoing and upsetting nature of these issues.
I'm not asking for a rewrite of the event or anything like that. Just some consideration of issues such as ageism going forward. Thank you.
