Thank you for raising these concerns with us- we understand how difficult this could be to voice, and greatly appreciate your input into how this event aligns with real-world issues.
We apologize if it was not clear in the original post that in no way, shape, or form have any Roaka been sacrificed. When designing the Roaka, we used the mythology of the phoenix as key inspiration, in which rebirth is a return to the beginning of the aging cycle, as this ties into existing game lore. The Roaka NPCs were never in danger of harm throughout this event, as the cycle that the lava provided was akin to a phoenix bursting into flames to be reborn of its own ashes. Each Roaka that undergoes the process does not lose their life, but simply reverts to an earlier stage of it. As such, there is no association of death or sacrifice of those individuals within the Roaka culture itself.
However, we understand that as this was not clear to the player characters, ICly this may have been a distressing situation given the Roaka’s failure to communicate this fact, and this may very well have looked like a sacrifice to some. Applying such themes to a sentient species should have been handled more carefully OOCly, and the full implications considered more intensively on our part, to avoid any such miscommunication or distress.
Additionally, the phrasing that was used in our writeup does not accurately reflect the initial intentions of the Roaka’s phoenix-inspired cycle. In particular, the phrasing of “weak and elderly” has very problematic undertones that we failed to consider when composing the event itself. Although the implications were unintentional, we recognize the issue you’ve raised and will consider our phrasing more carefully in the future. Additionally, we will be amending the original log so that it contains content warnings for these potential subjects, as we do not want anyone to stumble upon them without notice.
Again, thank you very much for raising these issues with us. We hope that we’ve been able to respond in a manner that has addressed your concerns in their entirety, and we will take further care in composing events in the future. Should you have any further questions or concerns, or if you would like to discuss this with us further, please don’t hesitate to respond here, or feel free to contact us on Plurk or Discord for ease of conversation.
