TEST DRIVE MEME ( 004 )

Test Drive Meme #4
Hello, and welcome to LifeAftr! We’re pleased that you’re expressing an interest in the game. Here, you can test the waters, gauge how your character may fare in the world of LifeAftr, and even gain some in-game incentives, if you so choose.

Remember that Reserves will open on October 17th and that Applications will open on October 24th!

Two important notes:
1. LifeAftr's test drives take place on the island of Mu, which exists apart from the real world and possesses a dream-like quality that characters are innately aware of from the moment they appear on its shores. No need to panic or fret. Dreams are odd things, after all - and anything can happen in them. Why would anyone question where their mind chooses to wander in its sleep?

2. Due to the nature of Mu, threads in our test drive can not only be accepted as thread samples in your application, but can be accepted as game canon as well. In fact, certain choices your character makes in Mu have the potential to bear in-game consequences, largely in the form of test drive reward items.

Gone Apeshit
The peaceful island upon which you've found yourself is pleasant enough, isn't it? Clear turquoise waters, white sand, verdant copses of trees...it might be a little on the humid side, sure, but what's not to love?

The answer will come in the form of some decidedly simian ululations and howls that will inevitably start echoing through the trees, paired with the occasional loud, firework-like bang of some weapon being fired. The beach itself is safe, or as safe as beaches can possibly be, but setting foot into the jungle proper will prompt immediate, firepower-based retaliation from the group of monkeys that have elected to live there.
That's right: monkeys. Monkeys wielding rudimentary technology, no less, the most prominent example of such being the cannon-like, primitive firearms that shoot coconuts at interlopers. While their precision is not excellent, a direct or indirect hit can cause incredibly serious injury. Sure, you could opt to stay on the sidelines...but without any resources on hand, your only remaining solution is to either risk starvation or exposure, or to confront the gun-toting monkeys directly.

A pity Jumpman isn't here, huh?

Motherclucker
Congratulations! After who knows however long you might have spent exploring this strange new land - be it hours or eons or days or mere minutes - you've finally stumbled across some resources that may be viable! You've encountered a flock of bludroc, their nests brimming with speckled eggs that would surely taste delicious sucked raw or fried on a stone.

Unfortunately, this is a rather vast flock of the creatures, and they do not part with their offspring easily. While they lend themselves easily to domestication, these bludroc are quite wild, and quite unwilling to be beset upon by complete strangers. So if you encroach upon their territory, beware...for you may find yourself set upon by an abundance of pecking, flapping, screeching, colorful creatures.

Tick Tock
Mu's world is a curious one, no doubt. Its creatures often bear a strange resemblance to those in the world of LifeAftr proper, but some fauna can be found on no other landscape, in no other context, besides the dreamlike dips and peaks that only Mu can emulate.

One of those creatures is the clockroach.

Today, they seem strangely intent on flocking around those who have crossed into the lands of Mu for the first time; the uninitiated of LifeAftr. Their shapes are indistinct, to start with, but the click-whisper of rustling, mothlike wings almost sounds like your name, being uttered over and over...and over...and over...

They have a curious look to start with, make no mistake. But the longer you look, the more those forms start to solidify into a shadow to mirror your own, devoid of color or feature, but unmistakably resembling your general shape. While their edges are softly blurred and out of focus, their forms rapidly begin to solidify the more you interact with them. Speaking to them, touching them, even acknowledging them by looking their way, failing to ignore them utterly, will gradually start to bring them into greater clarity and focus. They do not speak. They merely follow - a shadow of your very own, unattached and allowed sentience.
Once they're solid enough to touch, you'll begin to hear a sound. A low, repetitive tick-tick of a timepiece, moving ever closer to some unseen deadline with terrifying regularity. It starts quietly, at first, but begins to grow louder, louder, until it drowns out all else.

The apparition may soothe and speak all it likes, but the artificial dread worming in your heart refuses to be shucked away. Everything else is a shadow hostile, a creature mistrusted. The fog is a tripwire that will surely trap you; that person approaching from over that hill? Doubtless here to kill you, and see that your invisible clock winds to an end.

But that dark storm boiling in the shadow behind you? Surely that has nothing to do with it...

[This is quite the predicament. Monkeys with guns, which sounds like the start of a punchline, or an exceptionally shitty level, lording over some stupid jungle. He doesn't want to stay on this beach forever, but you know what sucks? Getting hit.

If he was back home, if Kurogiri was here, it wouldn't be an issue. They could just leave, stop dealing with this jungle platforming trash, and continue on their merry way. But nope! No, he has to be alone, on a shitty beach, with no Kurogiri and definitely no Noumus. At this point, he'd be happy if Dabi were here - or, hell, Toga, who he's sure would get a kick out of stabbing an ape for the first time.

It's frustrating. It has him clawing at his neck, scratching angry red lines into his skin. He paints quite the picture - thin, shaggy haired, and inexplicably covered in hands.]

[Something is going to die. Probably one of those awful, infuriating birds, which would be the most satisfying thing in his life at this moment.]

Oi, oi. Stop moving.

[Why aren't these stupid things listening?

Despite the way they're constantly running at him and pecking at him, they're difficult to grab a hold of. While he had been intending on getting something to eat, these stupid birds have really pissed him off.

Which means they have to go. Which would be easy, if he could just grab them.]

It doesn't have to be this hard.

[But he's going to miss again, almost unbalancing himself, while getting perhaps the most vicious peck yet straight to his exposed ankle.]

[As entertaining as this spectacle might be, at some point she has to feel sorry for the poor birds being so tormented. Perhaps with a little sympathy to spare for their aggressor.]

[So it's after a few minutes of observation that she finally speaks up, letting her voice carry across the field.]
Mayhap it might be time to consider a different approach?

[Wow, rude, he is the one being tormented thank you very much.

By birds he very much wants to kill, but. Details, who needs 'em.]

If you're going to help, don't just stand there and watch.

[Which...isn't what she said at all, and he knows that, it just...doesn't matter all that much in the moment.

And, really, he can't be the only one with a vendetta.]

[Amusement curves across her lips and shines in her fogged eyes, and she doesn't bother to hide it, much in the manner of the cats her Mi'qote heritage recalls.]

Help comes in many forms. Sometimes advice is one of those. You'll forgive me if I don't rush in and endure just as much pain for just as little gain as you. Tell me, what are you trying to accomplish?

[u g h]

You're not my teacher. [The amusement makes him twitch, splitting his annoyance between here and the birds. Still, despite that he answers her question.]

I'm going to kill them and make sure I never have to see one of these ever again.

[His plant starts and ends there, mostly. Any sort of considerations for the future have long since been abandoned.]
eyegowiththeflow: (thinking)

[personal profile] eyegowiththeflow 2017-10-16 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
[One eyebrow twitches upwards.]

That's a curious choice. A renewable resource, providing us with ample eggs and thus the ability to survive all the longer here, and you wish to extinguish it?

[An uncharitable little part of her wonders if he has the Garlean third eye -- but plenty of Eorzeans could be just as narrowsighted.]

Putting your own... desires aside, you might give a moment's consideration to how others will react. For your own well-being in the long term, if nothing else.

i don't think i've ever felt the need to apologize for a character so quickly

[personal profile] corpserun 2017-10-16 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't care.

[He huffs, sounding entirely and completely like a spoiled brat. Which, really, he basically is.

He shoots here a dirty look, before turning his attention back to the bludrocs clustered around him.]

If other people wanted these birds to survive, they should have started raising their own. Their lack of foresight doesn't mean I can't do what I want.

[His hand twitches. After a moment of glaring at the birds, he giggles.]

There's more animals on this stupid island than these birds. Human or cat wouldn't be so bad in a pinch.
eyegowiththeflow: (statement of fact)

Eh she's met worse

[personal profile] eyegowiththeflow 2017-10-16 08:29 pm (UTC)(link)
[Y'shtola shrugs slightly, hands spread at her sides.] You expect to survive entirely on your own, then? To declare enmity so swiftly with everyone else present? I do not understand the logic, but I would be remiss did I not warn you that you are choosing a miserable struggle for yourself. Working with others to survive is an easier and more gainful approach, while openly making an enemy of yourself will only bring you harm and grief in the long run.

I do not think you want that, so I tell you plainly: abandon this course. I'll speak nothing of it should you do so. [His pride is his greatest barrier, if she is any judge of character; like as not, he'll refuse simply because the advice comes from someone else.]
corpserun: (Default)

bless her soul

[personal profile] corpserun 2017-10-16 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
[Typical. That sort of response is just typical. It reminds him of Kurogiri, of All For One, and it's not a stretch to imagine one of the two using those exact words with him. They were always both talking about allies, about working with people, always trying to tell him how to see the usefulness of people before dismissing them outright.

They were always pushing him to expand their influence, and they would have done the same here. He can't deny that.

Coming from a stranger, it's infuriating, but the words do get him to pause.]

Why do you have to talk like that?

[His hand moves up, a nervous tic, fingers resting against his throat.]

Are you suggesting we work together?
eyegowiththeflow: (a little wry)

[personal profile] eyegowiththeflow 2017-10-16 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Master Matoya used to liken cooperation to a broom. One blade of straw or twig alone will move nothing, she would say: not dirt nor leaf nor ball of dust. Only many working together, bound by a string that set them all upon a common cause, could accomplish the task they were set to do.

[Behind two of her fingers, a bemused smile curls her lips, as her voice loses some small fraction of its even, measured tones.]

Of course, so saying she would then set me to sweeping up after her, and this despite the fact that she was perfectly well capable of enchanting her brooms to do the task at hand better than I could, so I can't say the analogy should be taken from there. But I mention this to answer your other question. I speak as I do because I have studied long and laboriously under many scholars and worthy minds who valued education and elucidation.

[Her smile grows wider as it grows more wry, and she flicks aside her hand as if waving away a bug.]

Of course, Master Matoya also gave up diplomacy in favor of blunt rudeness in her later years, so perhaps if I make it to mine I'll grow tired of careful statements and simply pin the ears back of anyone I see should it suit my tastes.

[Never mind that she would not make it to her later years.]

...Is this some sort of joke?

[So many words, and they don't mean anything. It's all...words for the sake of words, just going in one big circle talking about someone he doesn't know, someone he doesn't care about.

What's the point? She could have said all of that nonsense about cooperation without that tangent about...brooms about having to do chores.

It feels a little bit like he's being mocked. Like with Overhaul, the yakuza's stupid insistence on playing games while making deals. A bunch of nonsense that's only purpose is to distract, chew up time.]

Cooperation, metaphors, diplomacy... None of that has any real impact without examples behind them, reasons for people to follow you.

[Despite how he doesn't sound like he believes anything she's saying, he is listening. Selectively listening, maybe, but...

There has to be something useful about her. He can find that, tolerate all of this fluff, if only so he won't disappoint All For One when he arrives. (Because he definitely will be. There's...there's no way he wouldn't.)]

Do you have a reason?

[Asides from basic survival instincts, anyways.]
eyegowiththeflow: (arms folded)

[personal profile] eyegowiththeflow 2017-10-19 02:07 pm (UTC)(link)
[Hadn't she just...? Y'shtola raised a hand to the bridge of her nose, using a little gentle pressure to fight off exasperation.]

The reason is logic. Sense. You have been struggling to slay one bird, and should you succeed you will have one meal. Aid others in capturing one, you will have several meals, and the good will of others and their future aid besides. It is not a difficult decision.
