TEST DRIVE MEME ( 015 )

Test Drive Meme #15
Hello, and welcome to LifeAftr! We’re pleased that you’re expressing an interest in the game. Here, you can test the waters, gauge how your character may fare in the world of LifeAftr, and even gain some in-game incentives, if you so choose.

Remember that Reserves will open on September 17th, and Applications on September 24th!

Two important notes:
1. LifeAftr's test drives take place on the island of Mu, which exists apart from the real world and possesses a dream-like quality that characters are innately aware of from the moment they appear on its shores. No need to panic or fret. Dreams are odd things, after all - and anything can happen in them. Why would anyone question where their mind chooses to wander in its sleep?

2. Due to the nature of Mu, threads in our test drive can not only be accepted as thread samples in your application, but can be accepted as game canon as well. In fact, certain choices your character makes in Mu have the potential to bear in-game consequences, largely in the form of test drive reward items.

Drawn to You
The forest is dark, silent but for the snap-buzz of cricket song. Nearby, the soft babble of running water threads its way between the rough-barked trunks, though the origin of said water is difficult, at first, to pinpoint.

Granted, you probably aren't paying much attention to the forest, or the water, or the darkness. You're probably more concerned about the creatures flitting to and fro in sparse groups, most of them quite small. They tend to vary in appearance - some look to be totally benign, while others considerably less so - but all belong to the same species.

Scribblets are wily beasts, dream-haunters by nature, and they seem to revel in the idle torment they inflict upon those who cross their paths. You, dear travelers, are no exception. And while they are quite easily crushed into dust once caught, they are exceedingly slippery, agile creatures that are most difficult to pin down.
If you're not careful enough, the scribblets will fasten a peculiar tether to you. It looks very much like it is made of the same materials they, resembling a sketchy line of crayon, drawn into the third dimension. Their intent, tonight, is to tie you to something that will make your life difficult - binding you to a tree trunk or to a branch far above the ground, tying your hands together...or even tying you to someone else. These bonds will only grow progressively denser and heavier the more you struggle against them.

Fortunately, the solution here is very simple. Like any drawing, it can be washed away if you find water. You'd simply better hope that you're able to collaborate with whoever you must in order to access said water, whether it's working alongside whoever you might be tied to, or convincing someone to lend you a hand.

You'd better hope the scribblets don't go after them either, by the way.

Quarantine Breached
Whatever this place once was, nature has long since claimed it for its own. A darkened, secluded laboratory now nearly swallowed by thick snarls of overgrowth is probably not your ideal vacation spot, particularly since there's a dearth of any decent lighting sources here. Drenched in shadow as this place was, it might have been helpful if you had thought to bring a light.

Fortunately, that problem is soon to be solved! Twin smoldering points of light abruptly ignite several yards away from you, paired with the pitched mechanical hum of engaging circuits. Another pair of lights immediately spritzes to life just beside it, and another pair, and another...and another...and...

Well, there seems to be a lot of them, doesn't there?
"Attention," chimes a pitched, automated voice, doubtless issuing from one of the many automatons that have begun to stir awake, one by one. "Potential host sighted. Quarantine breached."

You must understand, traveler: the island of Umui was nothing like this. The guardian units there were conscious nurse-bots, charged with caring for the sick and dying populace of a hospice island. Most did so with as much care as they were capable. But in the initial days of Umui's exploration, a great deal of explorers' anxieties revolved around these fallen automatons, and what possible purpose they may have served.

We invite you to imagine a scenario in which this went horribly wrong.

Consider these automatons to be shadowy, overzealous mirrors of their long-dead, real-world equivalents. They have learned to become hyper-devoted to their task of keeping their patients safe; so devoted, it seems, that nothing will stop them from fulfilling those obligations. They intend to catch and sedate you so that you can be...returned...to a place of safety.

Unfortunately, this place of safety probably entails an inescapable four-walled room or a hospital bed, and it's doubtful, to say in the least, that enough of their programming remains for them to remember to care for and feed you once you've been returned to whatever passes for a quarantine zone. In a decrepit, dilapidated building like this, it's probably not pleasant.

Our advice is to simply not get caught. If this means doing some inevitable destruction to all this complex hardware in the process, well...at least there's no chance you'll be billed for damages.

The New Farm Simulator Looks Great!
It is possible that you vaguely recall being asked to take watch this evening. By whom? Oh, please, that doesn't matter! With the pleasant hum of crickets in the air, and a backdrop of paddocks and grain fields around you, there are plenty of worse ways to spend your evening than this. All you have to do is keep an eye on passive livestock. The farmer's life is a simple one, where your biggest problem is trying not to fall asleep before your shift is over.

In theory, anyway.
While the scenery of the quiet countryside may be ideal, the state of the farm's buildings and and fences is far from it. For the curious creatures such as popo, there really isn't much to keep them in one place for long, wide stretches of fenceline ruined by fallen sections. Meaning that these massive, shaggy creatures can simply step over the crushed regions and start plowing their way contentedly in the direction of the fields of grain - fields that were certainly not intended to end up in some silly beast's stomach.

For others, sweet grains aren't as appealing as that sweet, sweet taste of freedom. A word of advice: once the popo are over those hills, you won't be seeing them again. And they might not be terribly fast on their own, but in a herd, they can get to be as dangerous as a stampede.

Hope you weren't expecting an easy night, because in LifeAftr, there's no CJB cheats menu to save you.

(It's not– trouble, it's just inconvenient. It is inconvenient that she cannot get to her sword, and can't seem to shake the creatures off no matter how cleverly she darts through the forest. Either way, she's close to raging just to get them to back off long enough for her to wrench her sword free when she hears a familiar voice shouting out to her from the top of the tree line.

She ducks. She knows better than to get in the way of Beauregard's many flips and kicks.)

Thank you– (she huffs, glancing up warily once Beau has landed. Her hand is still stuck fast: in fact, to her dismay, the other has become fastened there now in her attempts to pull loose. She looks ridiculous with her hands stuck at her belt like that. She clears her throat, shakes her head a little and gestures toward her hip.)

Could you help me...? I think it's magic, of some sort.
lesbeau: (« [Pose] still got 1 hp)

;3c yknow like nya

[personal profile] lesbeau 2018-09-28 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
[She straightens up quick, spinning on her heel to see her. Shit, she wasn't imagining things. Beau spins her staff once, poking it in the direction of the creatures in a clear "back off" motion before slinging it over her shoulders and approaching Yasha.]

Hey. I mean uh-- hey, good to see you and. Stuff.

[Great, so. Let's just cut to the chase.]

'Ss that what they do?

[She doesn't know a lot about magic, but how hard can this be? Yasha's strong, and she has quick hands. They can get this.

Which means she just goes to fucking grab for it, unless Yasha says something to stop her. Because this is the level of planning everyone on this team is apparently capable of.]
barberian: (well i uh)

im going to kill you

[personal profile] barberian 2018-09-30 12:07 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't know, it just– happened. (She sounds blunt, frustration creeping in. It's bad enough to have been briefly overcome with what look like errant pencil scribbles, but now she's stuck with her hands at her belt in front of somebody else. She's embarrassed.

And she should have known Beau would look before leaping.

In hindsight, Yasha should have mentioned how her other hand became anchored at the hilt of her sword before Beau threw her own hat in the ring there too, but it's too late. Because now Beau's hands are stuck fast right on top of hers. Yasha's shoulders slump, and she closes her eyes for a moment, trying to will herself out of the situation.)

Great. Thank you, Beau.
lesbeau: (« [Frown] thanks i hate it)

theyre holding hands :3c

[personal profile] lesbeau 2018-10-05 06:30 pm (UTC)(link)
[Sorry Yasha, it is too late for all things forever. Beau just jams her hands right in therr and yanks, except... her hands decidedly do not come back. Except of course, she was reaching for Yasha's hands, so now they're doing god's worst hand holding exercise. Beau knits her brows, pulling a couple more times.]

Oh, shit. Uhhhh.

[She flattens her mouth to a line, looking up at Yasha.]

You didn't tell me it was sticky! I thought you were like, magic bonded or something.

[Beau tilts her head back, now seeing the scribbles advancing again.]

Probably no idea how to make this stop happening, right?
barberian: (oh hello)

thanks! she hates it

[personal profile] barberian 2018-10-06 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know how it works, (she protests, facial expression a combination of embarrassment and exasperation,) if I knew, I wouldn't be stuck.

(But she is stuck, and so is Beau. This is happening now. She can hear the scribbles advancing with intent to gang up on them again and stares about them in search of ideas of what to do. Climbing a tree is well out, as is fighting.)

We'll have to run.

(And with that, she's off. Hopefully Beau was ready for that sudden start.)
lesbeau: (« [Surprise] oh SHIT)

too bad she's...... stuck with it now

[personal profile] lesbeau 2018-10-12 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
[She's following along with this plan until Yasha decides go time is now and the pair starts moving. Or well, Yasha goes, and therefore so does Beau because she sure doesn't have the bulk to make that stop happening. She's a dex based monk, alright. It doesn't take her more than a few stumbled steps before she's moving, thankfully very fast, to keep in with Yasha's step.]

Okay but where are we running to?? If these things are chasing we need some kind of-- I dunno! Place? To go?

[They can't climb, where the fuck can they go where these fuckers can't get them?]

Can we get cover or something?
barberian: (giant woman)

ive had it up TO HERE

[personal profile] barberian 2018-10-15 10:19 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know!

(Everything about this is kind of awful and Yasha is compensating for that by losing her cool a bit. It's bad enough to not have access to any of her weapons, but now to have somebody physically stuck with her? And they're being chased relentlessly through the forest? And she has no idea where they are, or where they're going????

Hopefully Beau will forgive her for being blunt. It's like she's trying to brute force her way through the situation. She does a right, and then cuts straight through a clear and stumbles across a rocky bank. The rush of water is quite loud, now.)

Let's– maybe we can get through the river and they'll... lose our scent. (like dogs??????????????) Or something. Maybe they can't swim.
lesbeau: (« [Consider] okay mmmmaybe)

dont get us into a stickier situation

[personal profile] lesbeau 2018-10-24 07:17 pm (UTC)(link)
[It's kinda rare to see Yasha go nuts outside of fighting, but Beau has also never been on the receiving end of a rage before, so today might be full of all kinds of new experiences. Sadly, that's not the kind of intimate punching she's here for. Beau's eyes scan the area, picking up on the water, but she has a similar idea.]

Even if they can I bet we're better. We let the river carry us downstream a bit-- stay in the bank but follow the current. We'll lose 'em.

[Disregard the fact that neither of them have hands. You don't need those for swimming. It's fine. Besides, Yasha's super tall, her head probably won't even go underwater.]
barberian: (a default expression)

im losing the will to live

[personal profile] barberian 2018-10-26 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
(what the hell is intimate punching supposed to be)

Okay, (Yasha says, a little distracted by the sound of the... things starting to catch up to them, and then,) okay, okay... okay.

(A habit unconsciously derived from somebody else, perhaps. She's shuffling her way down to the shore, taking care not to drag Beau down and along the bank, shooting a glance over her shoulder. The water is actually quite cold. Bracing? A bit past that. She still wades in up to her knees, then slips a bit on a rock and goes down on one with a grunt.

Except that when she struggles back up, one of her hands have come loose. Yasha stops, and takes a moment to yank it out from underneath of Beau's.)
lesbeau: (« [Excited] pub craaaaawl)

kiss kiss u3u

[personal profile] lesbeau 2018-11-02 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
[FISTING

Anyway, Yasha's actually being careful with her, which is surprising-- she kind of expected her to just barrel ahead and Beau would die or not. It's confusing, if not a little pleasant, to make it easier for her to also make it down the bank.

Of course, then Yasha slips and Beau just goes totally under. By the time she makes it back up, she stands, unconsciously wiping her hair back from her face.]

Shit, alright, we didn't have to get all the way in it, but--

[Wait. She looks down at her hands, and then back at Yasha.]

Oh fuck! Do you see that?

[She looks back to where they came, towards the scribbles.]

Take that you squiggly assholes!
barberian: (well done)

no kissing >://(

[personal profile] barberian 2018-11-05 05:51 am (UTC)(link)
(Hey c'mon, Beau is still her friend! She's aware enough of her stride that she can tamp it to keep Beau from falling flat on her face. Not that that helps when it comes to slipping in the river, but you know. She helps to yank Beau up by the back of her shirt.

Which she can do. Because her hands are working... incredible. Yasha will never take her hands for granted ever again. She glances back when Beau shouts, and turns to watch the scribbles hitting the water and promptly dissolving. The rest of them have backed up from the river's edge and are all but piled atop each other now, for they had to stop so quickly.

The whole sight is so funny. The whole thing is really funny actually, especially now that they're out of danger. She smiles, then sniggers a little, ducking her head.)

That... worked out better than expected.

(She holds her hand out for a high-five.)
Edited (just gotta add the high five) 2018-11-05 05:54 (UTC)
lesbeau: (« [Flip Off] GET FUCKED ASSHOLE)

[personal profile] lesbeau 2018-11-07 08:26 pm (UTC)(link)
[Beau whoops triumphantly, laughing as the scribble creatures fall over each other and disappear into the water. She flips them off for good measure.]

Yeah! We crushed it!

[She will absolutely give Yasha that high five- it's very enthusiastic, because Beau does nothing by halves.]

What weird little fucks. Almost like they're literally living ink or something. Can that even happen?

[Beau looks at her hands quickly.]

Glad they weren't eating us or whatever.
barberian: (yeah im a girl yeah i have a sword)

..........ok, just one is fine

[personal profile] barberian 2018-11-08 09:27 am (UTC)(link)
We did.

(Beau always does a little leap when she does a high five, and it never fails to make Yasha smile. It's cool.)

I don't know, I've never seen anything like them before...

How did they stick our hands together? (That had been the worst. Not being able to use her sword to fight almost rendered her useless.)
lesbeau: (« [Confident] fight me in the pit)

ok..... but what about Two

[personal profile] lesbeau 2018-11-11 05:40 am (UTC)(link)
[Listen, Yasha, ur tall. Beau isn't short but Yasha tall and it's kind of hot honestly. Anyway- that's not the point. What is the point is Yasha looks adorable when she smiles and that's a good thing to find out under any circumstances.]

Probably some kinda magic. Or like, that's their whole bonding thing, like maybe first they stick you together and then they eat you.

[Beau why.]

But I mean, if water kills 'em they're running a pretty big weakness here.
barberian: (worth a lot)

DON'T PUSH IT

[personal profile] barberian 2018-11-13 11:19 am (UTC)(link)
They don't look big enough to eat us.

(She's watching the scribbles that are left behind on the bank, angrily watching them. They are making a low buzzing sound. It's a little disconcerting, but it's so obvious they can't do anything so long as they're standing in the river, so Yasha just stares right back.

Then, she glances at Beau, and frowns.)

Oh, you have... right there, some of it's still on you.

(She gestures vaguely to her own collarbone then suddenly ducks, cups her palms in the water and splashes Beau vigorously.)
lesbeau: (« [Thoughtful] well im outta ideas)

BUT.... BUT KISSU

[personal profile] lesbeau 2018-11-17 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
[She's just got her arms crossed looking at these things on the bank, casually sticking out her tongue and making faces their direction for her own amusement. She isn't super listening until Yasha mentions there might be one, so she starts to turn towards her to try and recover.]

Oh shit, where--

[And then Beau just gets fucking doused, standing there with her arms up totally still. There's a couple seconds where she's just still, the water dripping off her face, arms, and chest into the water.]

... Did you get it?

[Dumbass.]
barberian: (cute)

YOU'RE ON KISSU PROBATION

[personal profile] barberian 2018-11-19 04:29 am (UTC)(link)
(Yasha, her expression completely dead pan, ducks a little to cup her hands underneath the water again.)

No.

(And she splashes Beau again, head to toe. this could go on for a while maybe)
lesbeau: (« [Look] you can stay the night)

NOOOO HOW COULD U

[personal profile] lesbeau 2018-11-21 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
[This time, she sputters, putting her hands out by the second splash.]

Okay, okay, you-- I think you did!

[She's not as dumb as she seems, and ducks down to splash a big handful towards Yasha, too.]

Maybe we gotta check you too, huh? They could blend in to all that black and white you've got!

[Splash splash splash]
barberian: (well done)

EASILY

[personal profile] barberian 2018-11-23 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
(Only a little bit dumb, then. Yasha chuckles, hunching her shoulder against the returning splash. This is stupid, but it's nice to cool down after sprinting like mad through the forest too. Besides, splashing Beau is fun.)

I don't know... I think they like to be on small people who jump a lot more than big people who are very still.

(SPLASH SPLASH SPLASH)
lesbeau: (« [Smug] 24k magic)

BETRAYAL

[personal profile] lesbeau 2018-11-28 08:40 pm (UTC)(link)
They got you first! You're the one who got me stuck!

[Just to really go for it, she jumps, splashing further with the waves she can generate from her feet hitting the surface.]

How do I know this wasn't your plan to get me trapped in a river, huh?!
barberian: (ho ho ho)

maybe so

[personal profile] barberian 2018-12-01 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no, you've discovered my plan, (Yasha says, and she's half-laughing through it now because the whole thing is very stupid and funny,) to get you into a river! Now what?

(Beau's jumping idea is very good though, Yasha's going to do that too. One by one the scribbles are giving up on them, glaring at the pair of them as they retreat in waves.)

We did it, (she says triumphantly as the last one clears out.) Not bad.
lesbeau: (« [Blush] oh shit thats gay)

gosh

[personal profile] lesbeau 2018-12-03 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
[She's gonna formulate some sort of response about some plan to get her wet, but she looks up and sees Yasha dripping, her clothes clinging to her waist and chest, and decides she cannot go down that road for fear of just dropping dead. Beau blinks a few times, reaching up to smooth back the pieces of her hair that have fallen out of the undercut and get them out of her eyes.]

Uh-- yeah. Yeah, we sure figured that one out. Maybe we can... take some water, or whatever? If we run into 'em again.

[Or they could just stay here in the river that's also okay. Beau doesn't mind getting wet when it's wet like this.]
barberian: (rough tough)

[personal profile] barberian 2018-12-06 01:57 pm (UTC)(link)
(It really is impossible to miss that Beau is looking at her because she goes very silent for a moment, and that is enough for Yasha to know. Perhaps unfairly, she pulls her wet hair over her shoulder with both hands and wrings it out, which definitely shows off her arms, because sometimes she is a menace. The tiny voice in the back of her head that can sound suspiciously like Mollymauk when it wants to, cackles.)

That's a good idea.

(She really does have nothing on her though. Just the Judge, nothing at her belt or on her back.)

Do you have anything to keep extra water in?
lesbeau: (« [Look] d u d e)

[personal profile] lesbeau 2018-12-11 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
[This is an attack? This is an assault. Here she is, being a respectable gay, being treated like this. What the fuck.]

Uhh... hang on.

[Beau pats at her body, some of the stuff strapped to her. But none of it's water.]

What if we just... don't wring out our clothes. And then we do it if they show up.

[Great.]
barberian: (*gay fluster*)

[personal profile] barberian 2018-12-14 12:35 pm (UTC)(link)
(Sometimes life isn't fair, Beau.)

I mean, we will probably get... very dry, while we're walking? I don't know about you, but I walk very fast.

(She has bigger strides too, so this idea is out.) Maybe we could just– (she gestures at her mouth????) you know, have a mouthful of water and... hold it, and... spit on them or something.
