April Event: Young Volcanoes

APRIL EVENT: YOUNG VOLCANOES

After all your help in repairing their homes and being willing to trade and converse with them, the Roaka have clearly decided that you're more than simply friendly - you've earned a place among them, in what appears to be a relatively regular celebration, one that they've held plenty of times before. It doesn't seem to be connected to any celebratory survival efforts, but that may very well be part of it. It maybe hard to say...unless you ask the Roaka directly.

But the Roaka are also notoriously poor at explanations.
Read on below, dear adventurers, for a rundown of what the month of April will be looking like. You may participate in any part of this event, all of it, or none of it, as you desire! We will note, however, as a warning: this event will feature both natural disasters and the potential for ifestiphobia, or a fear of lava.
The Festival of Cycles: We Are Wild

The Roaka are busy in their preparations for what, if asked, they will refer to only as the Festival of Cycles, an incredibly important celebration to be undertaken. Thanks to your help in the month and days preceding, they have very kindly opted to include you in these festivities, if you so choose! So, come April 10th, there will be food and drink, and all manner of good cheer to be shared - and even an open bonfire, for you to share in some communal light and warmth.
With so much to eat and drink and plenty of celebratory atmosphere, you might be mistaken for thinking that surely nothing else is amiss here. And, from the Roaka's perspective, there isn't...

Among the spoils to be had, there is a particular desert favored by the young ones among the Roaka - a slushy watermelon treat, naturally sweet and even served in the opened half of a watermelon, and referred to as the Youngdrink. It's not clear what's inside of it, but anyone who samples it will find that there must be something...something very strong in it...because your eyes will very quickly start to grow heavy...

And no matter how high your metabolism, you'll quickly pass out.
Mount Alysum: I Thought You Were a Mountain

If your character partook in the Youngdrink, they will wake somewhere...dark. Cool. Cramped? Surrounded by a cluster of smaller, darker silhouettes. It's clear that they're in a cave of some kind...but why? And how?

As it turns out, your character, by partaking in the Youngdrink, has been sorted in among the Roaka's young, who have been sequestered somewhere safe for...for what comes next. That safe place, as it happens, is underneath Mount Alysum, in a heretofore unknown network of caves that exist, apparently, at the mountain's heart. From there, you may very well wish to wait things out, as many of the Roaka young seemingly plan to - but you may also wish to try and find your way back to the surface, given that the mountain itself is not altogether stable. It will periodically shake and shiver, and it's very possible that you might risk getting trapped by a cave-in if you don't find your way out.

The exit to the caves can be found on the B3 square, though the tunnels that take you out are winding and almost mazelike, and can be incredibly disorienting to traverse without any light or means of navigation. As it opens up to the ocean, you may wish to be careful in navigating your way back to solid ground...if the commotion engulfing the rest of the island doesn't discourage you too terribly, that is.

And just what is going on out there that might be making all this ruckus?

A good question! The answer to that question would be Mount Tharama. As it turns out, Mount Tharama isn't solely a mountain.
It's a volcano.

Its time - and yours - has just run out.
Mount Tharama: Until I Saw You Erupt

If your character did NOT partake in the Youngdrink, they will be wholly awake for what comes next. The Roaka are incredibly discreet about the process of relocating their young - and anyone else that they've decided must be young as well, if they're passed out from the Youngdrink - to the caves located beneath Mount Alysum. While it's possible you might catch them making that transfer, the hustle and bustle of the day following the Festival of Cycles is also so intent that you may very well miss this transfer.

Especially given that Mount Tharama is starting to make some rather worrying noises, and spewing bright plumes of acrid smoke into the sky. Even more concerning, possibly, is the fact that the Roaka seem very determined to transport their weak and elderly, noticeable from the intensity of the wrinkles and gnarls that have warped and bent their frames, to the very base of Mount Tharama.

Positioning them so that they're in the path of what will soon become a nigh-unstoppable lava flow.

At this point, perhaps it will become obvious to you, and others, that some among you are missing. Or perhaps you realized it before then, and no Roaka was willing to pause in their work to remark upon this. At this point, you may either interrogate request from the Roaka that they tell you where they are, to locate them...or do what you can to survive the next few days, as Mount Tharama does what all active volcanoes inevitably do:

Erupts.
From April 11th to April 15th, the air will become thick with ash. The sides of the mountain become overcome with an outpouring of red-hot lava, sluggish but creeping forward inexorably, setting all greenery aflame with ruthless immediacy. Those simply-built abodes at the foot of the mountains suddenly seem to be quite reasonable, considering that this must not be the first eruption the Roaka have faced; with the regular and complete extermination of their village and gardens, it's no wonder that everything they have built is not built to last.

Once the lava flow reaches the base of the mountains, where the Roaka have situated their elderly and dying, a truly fantastic - and potentially alarming - event will occur. Anyone who may have watched a eucalyptus tree being set aflame will be faced with a very similar scenario: the old Roaka caught in the seeping magma will abruptly and loudly catch flame with an explosive burst of sparks and light and sap. This violent reaction does not seem to bother the other Roaka at all - largely because they all seem very keen to retreat to Mount Alysum for safety from the lava's crawl. Their armorlike bark-skin, however, is more than sufficient in keeping them safe from the worst of the guttering embers and blasts of hot air flung along by the tumultuous eruption.

Characters left outside have two options: the first, to locate their fellows trapped beneath Mount Alysum, before any further tremors trap them within. The second, to attempt to divert the natural flow of the lava before it consumes them...or the mana pool.

It's very possible the Roaka did not account for the fact that a mana pool should not be utterly engulfed in lava. After all...they've never needed to use it.

If your character is incapable of drinking or unlikely to partake in the Youngdrink BUT you would still like them to be in Mount Alysum's group, just drop us a line in our questions and concerns thread! We'll be happy to figure out a way for you to get your intended experience out of this event, regardless of whatever logical barriers there may be!
The Aftermath: As the Dust Settled Around Us

Those of you concerned about the well-being of those Roaka left by their fellows to the lava...fear no longer. Because once the dust settles and the eruption has ended, the cooling shell of lava, rapidly charring ash-black, will start to flake and crumble away. This process generally takes anywhere from a few hours to a few days, but once it's done, something unmistakable will emerge from the fire-blasted shells of burnt-out bark, the husks of the Roaka seemingly left to perish at the mountain's base:

Tiny, baby Roaka.

As the name the "Festival of Cycles" suggests, Mount Alysum's eruptions are not only common, but expected, as a vital part of the Roaka life cycle. The elderly of their number, having reached the end of their life, have been reborn in the fire and ashes. Some of you have asked, and heard tell of this.
The Roaka did not see fit to warn you...but then, it did not occur to them to. This is perfectly normal, where they're from, and they're decidedly unaccustomed to creatures different to them in any way. Their young have not grown a protective enough shell to protect them from the elements in this tumultuous event, and so they are shielded from the worst of it by being sequestered elsewhere. And as the air currents start to wick at the charred remnants of their elderly's previous lives, you can't blame them for warning you for what comes next, either - because it would never have occurred to them that this was even possible.

The ash of the Roaka consumed by the flame is in the breeze, and the effects it can have on those who breathe in too much of it, can be...alarming.

Namely, it has a very interesting effect on one's age, physical or mental...or both.

Those who inhale too much of this ash or smoke may be affected in a plethora of ways. They may find themselves waking up having grown older or younger, and their memories and powers may or may not follow suit. For inorganic characters, this may translate to too much of this ash being caught up in their circuitry or internal systems, and snapping their "mental" age forward or backwards in their personal timeline. This may cause characters to lose all memories up to a certain age, revert to a younger personality, or simply suffer a physical transformation and little else. Characters may yo-yo between various extremes, waking up older one day and younger another, however much or little you would prefer!

In short, this may affect your character as much or as little as you would like it to, and also for as long as you would like it to. These effects can be felt from April 15th to April 30th, and can even affect those on Ensō, as the ash is carried on wind currents and gusted all across both islands.

This event will likely feature two logs for its duration: one for the festival and the eruption, and an aftermath log to explore the effects of the eruption and its unique aging properties. In the meantime, feel free to use this post for event plotting and, as always, to ask any questions you might have!

Agent Texas will be consuming the Youngdrink and end up in the caves. She will make a valiant attempt to escape, and hopefully will make it safely to the surface before the eruption.

Once the ash begins circulating through the air she will revert to the size of a 12-year-old girl, which is something she never was in canon. But her body is organic and can be de-aged this way! She'll actually be desperate to be reverted to normal size. It's bad enough she doesn't have her robot, but now this?

ren will be partaking in the youngdrink and holing up in the mountain until things stop. she's not gonna try to get out earlier than she has to. AFTERWORDS i'm thinking about hip hoppity hopping between adult and kid ren at random. i don't really have set dates JUST GONNA DO IT.

young[er] ren is straight from the lab and she's never been outside so everything's gonna straight up spook her. she's way more well behaved since she's under constant surveillance from scientists at this point and will likely be more open about all that business. she's just gonna be uber terrified and Not Move bc wtf is sand she's never seen the sun for realsies what the heck it's hot where's the AC when do they drop off the trays of food!!!!

adult ren is gonna be la flavor since she dies young in canon and i'm still deciding on all this stuff, but she's gonna be around. she's mostly gonna be the worst babysitter and attempt to be a good aunt to all the youngings causing CHAOS in her own special way. like, let's learn to loot. that's a fun bonding activity. wanna stay up all night and look at the stars? nice, so does she. there's no rules at casa de ren. funfetti all night every night. i may have her keep her current mems and let her see she gets to be an adult body someday in some reality. it's just so much.

He'll definitely partaking in the Youngdrink, because when has he ever said no to unknown substances?

Baby!Molly is essentially just the same Molly but with shorter hair, no tattoos and pretty much non-verbalness aside from one word. Because Molly's existence is weird.

TIM WRIGHT + THE DRIFTER + AGENT WASHINGTON

[personal profile] postictal 2019-04-08 07:41 pm (UTC)(link)
TIM
⊗ won't be drinking very much at all, so he'll be stuck on the outside and pANICKING WHERE ARE HIS KIDS?????? he'll be of...some help in terms of trying to get people to safety and such, but he'll also be preeeeetty out of sorts given his state of Panic

⊗ because i'm a sucker for pain, i'm definitely going to age tim down to his child self. this is basically tim at the Peak Of His Trauma - he's been abandoned by his mom, more or less, he constantly sees things that people insist aren't real, he's a cocktail of mental health issues that have yet to be properly diagnosed, and he's currently growing up in a hospital. he'll be a bundle of traumatized nerves, skittish, and prone to jumpy behavior. also, possibly, likely to turn to arson by way of self-defense. :')

THE DRIFTER
♦ will be taking the Youngdrink and waking up in the mountain. they won't be happy about this, and will immediately start trying to get out. they've navigated underground passageways before, but those NEVER mean anything good and few things terrify them more than being trapped in one place without hope of getting free.

♦ i'll probably age them down to when they were first created, which is...conjecture at this point and will be jossed thoroughly once that animated hld tv series comes out but W/E I GOTTA LIVE WHILE I CAN. since i speculate they were initially synthesized for some hinted-at war efforts, they're going to be. very Mindless Automaton I Was Built For War Drifter. probably not very talkative despite not being sick just yet. a higher constitution and a higher drive for violence can make them a potentially lethal combination, as well. so they'll look a little different, let's just say.

WASH
϶ undecided wrt whether he's gonna be in the mountain or not, though i'm leaning towards "not" so that he can try and help people get to safety and protect the mana pool and such. subject to change, though.

϶ definitely gonna age him down to pfl-era washington which means: younger, stupider, an unapologetic dork, way more carefree, prone to dumb jokes, occasionally impaired by social stumbles, and just generally a really likeable little shit. this will be pre-epsilon's everything so...ha ha enjoy him while he's bearable

϶ also gonna age him down further to child washington, which is basically a barbed spike-ball of repressed anger issues that have more or less gone completely unacknowledged, meaning he'll be liable to erupt if he's pushed enough. he put an old bully's head through a mirror at this age so, that'd be what you're dealing with lol

INITIAL PLANS ONLY i'm undecided on some of these

Church won't be partaking of the drink for...obvious no-mouth reasons, and probably running around genuinely helping trying to diver the lava flow Volcano-style once someone points out that it's heading for the only way home (besides boats). (He'll point out boats.) (Please inform him then that the boats are ALSO gonna burn, dipshit.) (I swear he'll be helpful! And hopefully I won't decide to melt him down, also Volcano-style.)

And then! He's gonna! Get a bunch of age-ash up in his grill and revert to the Alpha AI. Which...will initially not be pretty but then once he regains his chill will be much friendlier and less directly of an asshole than Church and outwardly care more. Gonna be a smart nervous ball of fraying nerves. And a smartass ball of nerves. Meh! Details will come when it happens but rest assured he's one of the reasons 'rvb is a comedy' is a joke.

So I'm thinking of a COUPLE different age options for each, just let me know what you wanna go for!! I'm still working out if they're going with the Youngdrink group, but in the meantime:

Erika will probably be available at roughly 8, at which point she’s a rowdy gremlin with no fear of death or God, and 13, where she’s basically a simmering ball of barely-contained rage trying really hard to fit in and be Normal. Either way, expect her to be… about as pushy as usual, maybe more. Just in different ways.

Notably, since the full moon will land during this event, the archipelago will be terrorized this month by something arguably worse than the usual hulking hyena-dog-beast: A puppy with thumbs. She is going to get into everything.

Ginko is gonna be coming from two polar opposites as far as where his mental health has gone during his life! At about 12, he was and will be a traumatized, depressed little twig who expects everything to go wrong for him, all the time, probably in ways that will be his own fault. On the other hand, sometimes he’ll be more where he was at 25 or so, meaning the least depressed he has ever been; he’ll be a bit more enthusiastic about almost everything than usual, but also more of a smarmy bastard.

I’m still working out whether he’ll be keeping his troll changes or not, but either way it should be said now - interacting with 12-year-old Ginko is very likely to result in content relating to child abuse and suicidal ideation from a child. If you’d rather avoid these topics, please let me know on his permissions here so that I know not to tag you with child Ginko!

Asgore will not be partaking in the Youngdrink, as it seems obviously meant for the children, so he'll be outside trying to help get people to safety. Unfortunately, fighting fire with fire isn't the best idea, but he'll do what he can.

He'll be getting de-aged both mentally and physically during the second half of the event! As a young prince, he was somewhat sheltered and more timid than his adult self, and he will probably cry on like, at least three different people. Neither his magic nor his sense of independence are very well-developed, so he's likely to stick to anyone who seems friendly - strongly preferring non-humans, though he could be convinced to get past his nerves for individual humans.

Michael has no problem yoinking some fun watermelon drink from children, so he'll absolutely be ending up in the mountain. Coming from an environment that definitely included lava, he's pretty much immune to the heat so long as he doesn't just stick his hands right in there, so he'll be available for more dangerous rescues as he tries to herd everybody out of the caves.

Given that he's only just arrived, he won't be experiencing any age shifts. He may actually ask someone to stab him if he starts acting off. BUT THAT WON'T HAPPEN, so he'll be available as a guy who looks like a grandpa to collect any stray children? He has very little experience with children on the whole, but he's willing to try, and he'll probably just default to talking to them like adults.

Kiriya is going to end up partaking in the Youngdrink because hey, that looks good, he doesn't know what's going on, and since he's on the shorter side of things and dresses in garishly bright colors, a tree person mistaking him for a child is not out of the question.

He's going to be turning into an eight year old who turns into a tricycle. I haven't decided if he's going to remember anything or just be like "oh, cool" and literally just roll with everything.

...and because I have no chill, at some point he will also be an eighty-year-old and surely nothing can go wrong there.

Like Asgore, Toriel will not be drinking the youngdrink, because she knows better than to drink strange substances in watermelons. She'll be attempting a rescue from outside, trying to lead people to safety. She'll also be trying to lead other would-be rescuers and will work with others to ensure things go smoothly.

When the ash causes her to deage, she'll deage both physically and mentally... to an adventurous, rambunctious little kid eager to get into all sorts of mischief. She's not going to be a well-behaved child, basically. She's going to be immensely curious about humans, especially humans her age, and she'll be anything but shy.

Sayoko is going to manage to not have any of the youngdrink! Because I don't wanna go make more icons once some of her friends hit the watermelon juice and up and vanish, her appetite is going to be considerably reduced. This leaves her around to rescue and wrangle kiddos later!

I do think I'll have the ash end up aging her to the point that she's old and grey, though. Where's my cane, do you want to play bridge, etc etc and so forth.

Starflight will not be partaking in the Youngdrink, and will be instead perfectly awake to deal with volcano stuff and experiencing the eminent fate of the NightWing tribe a little early. He'll be doing his best to get people out of the way of lava and help however else he can.

During the aftermath, he is going to be aged up to an adult for a good portion of it. Adult Starflight is your cool uncle who is a teacher and knows everything about everything but is friendly about it, and just happens to be the size of a house. If he thought human sized buildings were inconvenient before, they most certainly are now. He'll be hanging out around the Enso trying not to mess anything up or inadvertently frighten children (he is really good with kids once you get past the 'giant dragon' part.

I'm debating doing something with a younger child Starflight (about 7 yrs human age), who is basically just an even smaller and more nervous version of current Starflight and would likely hide in the library and never come out. Certainly not once the effect wears off and he is stuck inside. Human doors are inconvenient.

Foster will be forgoing the Youngdrink, because he's had an experience with Weird Offered Food once before.

De-aged, he'll approximately twelve years old, missing any memory of his adulthood, and human! There will be two child Fosters to interact with, first one who doesn't have a diagnosis yet and later, one who does.

Both of them will have reacquired the cognitive disabilities that pretty much defined his childhood. They're both coping with discouraging situations, but pre-diagnosis Foster is actually.... friendly? Like, really friendly. Kind of to the exclusion of anything else. Maybe if he's friendly enough, you'll forgive him for who he is?

Karako will be drinking the Youngdrink, and then.... aging up. Like.... WAY up. He won't be any taller, but he will be darker grey, and much bulkier. His horns will be massive. His honks will be a deep, resonant baritone. Cryptid grandpa is here and you need to stop praying for him because he's become too powerful.

Epsilon will also be skipping the Youngdrink, because he's a tree, and an adult, and doesn't eat things with his mouth anyway. He will revert to his pre-war memories, and have no idea why he's currently a tree.

Bucky here is absolutely going to be affected by the de-aging shenanigans, turning into his younger (either much younger or slightly younger depending on how you count) self from Captain America: The First Avenger.

He'll be taking on his first movie personality for the duration of the event, being incredibly puzzled as to why his clothes are all suddenly huge on him. Memories of those he's interacted with won't be affected, but feel free to have people notice the fact that he is quite suddenly not massively paranoid!

[personal profile] lesbeau 2019-04-09 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
OH BOY OH BOY

Kravitz will probably not be taking the Youngdrink because he's become hyper vigilant of not getting wasted in public, which instead means he gets to Enjoy The Lava Adventure and also freak out because people are missing and seriously he's got a hair trigger for kidnapping at this point. He'll calm down once everything's over... and then get caught in ash hell.

I'm thinking right now two prompts for the age event, where one is like a 9 year old Kravitz who is just a very sweet boy and like a ~30ish year old Kravitz who is newly in service to the Raven Queen and kind of freaking out about it actually?? I mostly want to play with the fact here that adult Kravitz doesn't consciously remember the things this event is going to draw out- he's over a thousand years old a shit tends to fade in that time. So if people want backstory that even he doesn't remember is backstory, HIT ME UP, and also please save this child he's doing his fuckin best

meanwhile Beau will shove her face in everything presented to her so I'm afraid her chances of her not ending up still unconscious under the mountain are like, really low. So chances are she'll be in the caves, helping people, still kind of fucked up but missing the lava action at least.

Then for the kid event everyone absolutely gets to encounter like 10 year old Beau who thinks she's hardcore and Decidedly Isn't and... im not sure honestly about others!! i'm debating a prompt where she's small but still knows it's Her or doing one where she's at least physically older, BUT IDK, im up for shenanigans all over the place tho

Legion is not going to be partaking of the drink, and will definitely be trying to do their best to divert lava from the mana pool.

More importantly, for the age related part of the event, they're going to come in two different flavors:

-Tiny Legion! They were never a child, and their mind is the same as ever, they're just ... inexplicably small? Will almost certainly have them do their robot dance at some point, because adorable.

-The Agricultural Unit! The more serious option. This Legion is physically de aged back to pre war, and each program has been de aged back to their first incarnation. For many of them, this is the Agricultural Unit that started the Geth rebellion, so that will be the most cohesive part of their personality, but they've also got a thousand other programs from the past and future feeding them all sorts of confusing information. They're a bit wary of the organics around them, but no one is a Quarian and also apparently the war is over so they'll probably only attack if threatened. They will, however, be very protective of any synths they encounter.

Pyrrha will partake of the Youngdrink because she's just too darn nice and these tree people seem nice too. This is possibly the worst idea she's had in a month.

She'll be turning younger; not a lot, but de-aging a few years. Specifically, she'll be reverting both mentally and physically to how she was in season 3 of RWBY. So be ready for a Pyrrha who is still as nice as older Pyrrha is, just a lot more eager to please, and possibly in the middle of a mental breakdown because she might have started her world's apocalypse?

Also what happened to her hair????

Nari will not be drinking the Youngdrink since she doesn't trust this place enough to do that. So she will be in the volcano rescue group. Her abilities for the most part will keep her safe, but don't ask her to stick her hand in the lava. As for de-aging, she will be small, and more volatile in that state. As in since she will be small, her sense of fear will be bigger and she's more likely to zap someone.

Yuuri will be drinking some of the Youngdrink because she thinks she's being polite and joining in with a festival. Oops.

Violet will not be having any of the Youngdrink but she will be aging down to THE TINIEST VIOLET YOU'VE EVER SEEN!!!! though I'm still on the fence as to if she'll be getting back her mentality from that time since UHHH IT WASN'T GREAT!!! Edward is abstaining from the Youngdrink, but he will be de-aging to his mid-series self! I am...still on the fence about if he'll still be monstery or not, but either way he's going to be a dumb asshole yelling for his brother and probably calling you a moron for believing in magic.

Chip will be getting some knockout punch, and they'll be aging up to being a somehow actually stable and mostly well-adjusted adult! Also kind of a shithead but look, we can't all be perfect.

agent maine

[personal profile] bloodbathing 2019-04-09 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Agent Maine will not be changing mentally. However, his body will be aging up approximately seven years. The most significant change is that Maine will lose his ability to speak. His Stone of Farspeech will accommodate his disability, but he'll be unable to vocalize anything beyond growls, snarls, and hisses. (Examples can be heard here.)

(Tentative: I may age him down (mentally and physically) as well, but that would probably come with child soldier warnings. (Reminder: you can opt out of that here.) LMK if you're interested in a younger Maine.)

Other than that, I guess he'll be playing a Responsible Adult? Who wants a 7 ft tall space marine to babysit?

Jester will absolutely be drinking that drink, are you kidding me. She's the type to stick anything that looks remotely appetizing in her mouth and then just spit it out if it turns out bad.

Meanwhile, she will be... kid Jestering. She'll revert back to her young self (probably like... ten, sure), and be... somehow... very similar, but also slightly, different? Young Jester is like twice as sheltered and also twice as much of a wrecking ball, so. Prepare thyselves.

I may also do some heavy headcanoning that will ALMOST CERTAINLY BE JOSSED because obviously I haven't fucking learned my lesson with this sort of thing yet. Mostly regarding her chosen virtue name, where she may have just recently chosen it, I'M NOT 100% cause I don't want to go down the rabbit hole of "well I don't know her given name so I can't do shit with that" but also want to play with this concept a lil more. WE'LL SEE.

Doctor Faust will be participating in the Youngdrink! Once he's come to, he'll likely try and help rescue as many people as possible from within the caverns.

After the eruption (and some very choice words for the locals), the good doctor will mentally regress back to a more psychotic and highly dangerous stage of his life! Fortunately, he'll also simultaneously regress back into a child, so he's harmless!
The whole thing is meant to be played for laughs, and ideally nobody is going to get hurt or take a scalpel-brandishing paper bag with arms very seriously.
