May Event: Lost in Translation
MAY EVENT: LOST IN TRANSLATION
Now we know that you've all been very busy exploring the new island, and for good reason! It's a welcome break, we're sure, from the standard fare most islands present, seemingly designed exclusively for relaxation. So it is that this month's kerfuffle won't be stemming from the island at all, but rather from a few spots of housekeeping that have been...let slip these past few months.Whatever do we mean by that? Well...
I Smashed My Phone
Those of you new to these islands may not remember, but the network present on LifeAftr is entirely courtesy of player characters who have sought to innovate inter-island communication to new heights. The Stones of Farspeech, designed by none other than Lup (
hellawrath), have been maintained by regular volunteers who have contributed at least one story from their monthly pool to keep the network functioning smoothly.
Unfortunately, out of that initial pool of volunteers, the number of contributions have dwindled to such lows that the network can no longer sustain itself.
Meaning that, come May 21st, it's going to do what any system under significant strain would.
Crash.

But Honestly I Feel Relieved
From May 21st to May 30th, the Stones of Farspeech will become...increasingly difficult to manage, to the potential point of both profound irritation and borderline horror. The network malfunction will be erratic and unprompted, and result in...all sorts of varying effects.
For an idea of what might occur, your character's Stone may be affected by one or more of the following:

[ ♆ ] Audio Slider: The sound in your Stone may suddenly cut out mid-conversation, be dimmed, or drastically amplified, seemingly at random.Characters may be hit with any number of these, or none, or all! The effects might stack, or they might not. If you can think of any other fun effects you'd like to play around with, feel free to ask us below! Chances are, we'd be willing to run with anything you can think of.
[ ♆ ] No Privacy: Private conversations may suddenly be made public, or you end up contacting someone instead of who you intended to contact. The little screen that gives you caller ID may or may not help in this instance - either by refusing to tell you that you've contacted the wrong person, or by telling you that you very much have.
[ ♆ ] Dial-Up: Your Stone just...screams. That's it. It just screams, and will not stop screaming. This may or may not be broadcasted to others, or to everyone!
[ ♆ ] Anon Forum: The caller ID function on your Stone shorts out, resulting in making everyone, and yourself, utterly anonymous. In some cases, vocal recognition might save you...though everyone's voices might be reduced to the robotic monotone used for nonverbal characters or a low, distorted tone instead, thus eliminating even that advantage.
[ ♆ ] Admit This: The Stone only sends messages that are completely honest, or deliberately botches whatever is said to them, scrambling the words until only honest words are relayed. Or, conversely, the Stone only speaks in polar opposites - utter lies.
[ ♆ ] Censorship: The Stone tries to "censor" whatever is spoken into it in filtering the words to the recipient. It's possible this might be a conventional censor, such as trying to block away uncouth language - or it might be a different sort of censor entirely, carving away entire swaths of words seemingly at random. It might be thematic...or it might be completely erratic. The choices is yours!
[ ♆ ] Oh Memory: The Stone transmits audio filtered from your memories and dreams - to anyone, and/or everyone. There's no accounting for what it might conjure up and issue, but it certainly won't be switching on or off with your input.
You Can't Reach Me
By the time of May 27th, the Storyteller will ask for a donation of stories to ensure that the network stabilizes. Characters may or may not take this opportunity to try and upgrade the Stones further, if they wish - that decision is up to them. The important thing is that the Storyteller has realized that monthly donations are no longer going to cut it, as far as the Stones are concerned. Relying on monthly supplements when the tellers of these stories can slip away and never return, or have no stories worth sharing...it's a flawed system in dire need of fixing. If there was ever a sign that this is the opportune time to fix it...
By May 30th, the network will hopefully stabilize, if the Storyteller gets enough stories. If it doesn't...well, your network stays broken, and you regress back to writing on the bulletin rock. Fun!
If you do provide them with enough stories to stabilize the Stones, they will cease malfunctioning and return to their original functions. It's a temporary solution at best, however...so the Storyteller will also be asking how characters feel about starting a sort of donation pool of stories they feel they can do without, to feed the network's power, as well as contribute to any island-wide efforts that might be made down the line.
They won't be taking anyone's stories without their consent, of course. Stories only have power when they are shared willingly, and not forcibly taken.
If this sounds like something you might be interested in, ICly and OOCly, we'll look into introducing this mechanic in the coming months!
