September Event: Burning Alive
SEPTEMBER EVENT: BURNING ALIVE

Nastrandir has not been the most hospitable of islands, with many unanswered questions left to chafe at those affected by the sirens' pull. It seems that questions are accruing at a startling rate - why so many of these old buildings appear to be burned, what those memories that bled into your minds last month even meant, and why the island's native fauna attempted to escape the island at the start of the month. Why this island is the way it is seems to be a mystery lost to the murky depths of its swamps and burnt out buildings - a frustration to some, if not many.
Perhaps there are questions that will never be answered. For others, those answers seem more than willing to broadcast themselves.
Come Join Me in the Fire
In recent times and in the latest mountain ranges characters have uncovered, a singular, ominous word has been found. If you've trod anywhere near the mountains to the eastern part of the island, it's likely that you've found it scrawled on the stones at some point, legible despite the signs of ancient carnage there and the places where the stone, like so many other places on Nastrandir, looks severely charred. That word has started to crop up with increasing frequency, the further east explorers roam:
"AHIDALGA"
It seems a meaningless word, at first, given importance only in that it's been found. That doesn't mean it doesn't have any meaning.
On September 12th, a certain group of explorers came close enough to find out exactly what that word means. All of a sudden, a lot of those little clues about what happened on Nastrandir will become a great deal clearer - why so many buildings and landmarks appear to be charred and blackened by fire, why the temple on G2 depicted so many people kneeling in procession to some sort of monster, why the memories of the opposite sides of the war back in August ended in fire.
Breaking through the ceiling of its lair within the mountainous region of I2, three giant heads lift into the sky as Ahidalga roars a loud, furious challenge, a brassy sound that can be heard across the entirely of Nastrandir. It is, quite simply, enormous in stature, nearly 200 feet tall at full height, boasts a natural armor of thick, steel-like scales, and all three of its heads spew flames.
Now Ahidalga, waking from an untold number of years of hibernation, has discovered that its island is now populated by something other than ogres and sheep. Unfortunately, the long slumber hasn't dampened its fiery temper, but it has bolstered its appetite. After being asleep for perhaps hundreds of years, that kind of nap means that it's going to wake up desperately, furiously hungry.
And just look at you all! You look...edible.
At this point, you have two options. You can run, and leave Nastrandir to its fate - abandon all its resources and its dangers and its potential discoveries - or you can stay and fight to rid the island of this scourge.
If enough islanders choose to fight, the risk of death will be high. Ahidalga breathes fire, and is a ruthless opponent. Its scales are thick and resist all but the strongest of piercing attacks, its teeth and claws are wickedly sharp and just as strong, and its pair of huge, leathery wings mean that it is also capable of flight. However, there will be benefits to defeating this creature. The dragon does have a significant hoard stowed away in its cave, and the beast itself is full of all sorts of useful, magical materials you could potentially use for tools - dragon blood, bone, sinew, scales, fangs, and so on. Managing to slay Ahidalga will reward adventurers with a loot far greater than anything that could be raked in by a mere search request.
If enough islanders choose to run, know that this doesn't render you completely safe from the beast's wrath - Ensō will be under siege, albeit briefly, during this time period. What's more, the island of Nastrandir will be entirely destroyed thanks to Ahidalga's wrath, and thus will not be accessible again in the future.
However, whether you stay and fight or choose to run and abandon the island, you're going to be having a little help...

Praying for a Savior to Arrive
Just before Ahidalga awakens from its slumber and decides to gorge itself on any adventurers who see fit to fight it, the ocean waters around both Ensō and Nastrandir will start to seethe and bubble upward, until gradually, they'll form...a particular shape. Worth noting is the fact that this shape may as well be a mirror image of Ahidalga, save for the fact that the dragon is covered in scales, and this one is made up entirely of streaming torrents of seawater. But it is almost as large, and boasts three long, serpentine heads.
Introductions and explanations are going to have to wait. All you're going to know from the start is that, no matter where you are or what you're doing - running, fighting, or hiding - you're going to have help.
Those keen on staying and assisting with the fight are more than welcome to do so. If you didn't take one of the tridents offered at the beginning of the month, you might find yourself a bit out of luck as far as actually damaging this beast goes - almost everything, from magic to weapons, will prove ineffectual against those hard, nigh-impenetrable scales. It's clear that, for whatever reason, those particular tridents are the only weapons capable of truly cleaving through Ahidalga's hide.
Don't worry if you didn't take advantage of that little boon at the start of the month, however. You'll soon find other weapons practically raining from the sky, streaming from the watery shape of the serpentine behemoth who manifested from the waves. You're going to need them, too; the tridents and their bladed counterparts will damage Ahidalga where other weapons cannot - and they're equally as effective against the many hundreds of smaller dragons pouring out of Ahidalga's ruined nest.
Nastrandir certainly isn't the safest place to be right now. Those more inclined to leave the watery figure to handle things on their own may wish to get back to the mana pool - and quickly. As the dragons clash, the island is left to cope in their destructive wake. Errant flames set fire to anything dry enough to burn, while heavy tremors shake the ground and rip the earth asunder. Anyone attempting to keep out of the swamps and marshes will find the higher regions of the island beset with landslides and rockfalls as the coastline rapidly crumbles into the sea.
The situation is dire, but adventurers aren't alone. Whether fighting or fleeing, coils of water will be springing up across Nastrandir, and are likely to assist those who have become turned around, or are about to come to harm. How effectively they can offer help is up to you, and they certainly can't be everywhere, but risks to your characters are most certainly...dampened with the assistance of this vast, new ally.
Ensō is another matter entirely.

Outrun the Monsters After Me
Back on Ensō, you won't be fighting alone, either; instead of coils of water, you'll be fighting or hiding behind flocks of furious paper birds as the activities on Nastrandir extends beyond its shores. Ahidalga's smaller but no less vicious offspring, numbering in the hundreds and ranging from the size of a horse to a double decker bus, are plenty eager to spread their wings and take flight to calmer waters. Though many are happy to avoid further conflict by flying off to islands unknown, dozens have taken to Ensō itself, much to the consternation of the islands security system.
Great flocks of paper have taken to the sky, harassing each beast they come across with vicious fervour. Unfortunately, flames and paper don't mix - the more capable offspring are more than willing to burn away any irritants that linger too long, in addition to everything else around them. Very quickly, multiple parts of Ensō are aflame, with very little the papers can do to end the fires or halt the creatures that started them.
Unless they can find a hero, of course. Maybe two. And if the willing prove sparse, the unwilling will do just as nicely, as the flocks of papers will stop at nothing to direct adventurers to where work needs to be done. Ignoring them may result in a paper supported flight that ends face down at a dragon's feet, or inches away from a raging fire. Fight and extinguish because you can - or because you have to, unless being barbecued is a personal goal of yours.
Those seeking refuge will find it in the Storyteller's temple, though something else is...absent. The lack of the Storyteller in person may not be so much of a surprise, but when called, the storytelling god will fail to make an appearance, or even offer so much as a response. You, and the paper flock, are on your own.
Should your character perish in this event, remember to submit to our Deaths page accordingly. Given the high risk of death and injury during this calamity, death penalties will be reduced for this event.
In the meantime, feel free to use this post to plot, ask questions for the mods, and decide what your character might decide to do. As always, we have a top-level below for you to venture any questions or concerns!

Ed is still absolutely welcome to try, and will find the easiest spots to weaken are the scales found on Ahidalga's stomach-- if he can get to them!
