OOC INTRO: MAY

State of the Game
Hello, and welcome adventurers, old and new! April was a month of changes and cycles and rebirth and renewal, as evidenced by the volcanic eruption on the island of Cahypdo and the strange effects that's had on the ages of characters and NPCs alike. Thankfully, by the time April has concluded, things will be restored to normal...or whatever passes for normal here, in any case.

We've loved the feedback we've gotten about the game thus far, positive and negative, and encourage you to contact us whenever you feel it is necessary!

Our intro log will be going up on the comms on May 4th. Until then, a few quick points:

1. Cahypdo. We recommend that anyone new to the game take the opportunity to read up on the island of Cahypdo, as well as trade with the Roaka, the local populace, if that interests them. Cahypdo will be vanishing when Storytelling goes up on May 20th, so get in any explorations while you can!

2. New Island. The votes are in, and islanders voted to go to the second option presented - the one represented by green flames and strange starburst patterns reminiscent of explosions. The new island will join LifeAftr's shores on May 10th, when it will become accessible for exploration!

In the meantime, feel free to use this post as an OOC intro and CR meme for the month of April - for new players to introduce themselves, for old players to meet and greet, and for general plotting to occur! If you want to chat or keep up with game updates, we also have both a plurk and a discord channel!

She's childish, kind, scared of her own shadow, and is living her best raccoon life. Current plans: I want any and all CR-it's all good. A close friend vanished this month and that's got her a bit bummed out, but otherwise she's up for shenans. Just goblining it up all over Enso.

Tell us about them: Two is considered a goddess in her world and has five other sisters, one of which is out to kill them. In actuality, she's a piece of an evil flower created from the memories of the murder sister. It's a lot. It's whatever. All her memories are fake and she's doing fine. She rules over the Land of Sands with her boo Cent and adopted a million orphans because she's like that. This goddess is full on gonna mom @ everyone. Like, she is super friendly, kinda ditzy, very protective and loves hard. She is 99% optimism and 1% unable to cope with tragedy without going catatonic. Also she has a big sword.

Current plans: Just trying to get her out there!! She'll be 100% up for explorations and would be a good fighty asset to a group. Because she is, unknowingly, an evil flower despite her cheery, friendly personality, spiritually inclined characters can totally sense something's off with her if they want. Gonna Do. Things. With her.

Tell us about them:

TIM has got troubled thoughts and the self-esteem to match. He's a depressed chainsmoker from a web series called Marble Hornets (aka that one slender man webseries that Started It All) and a CRAU from sol_raveh. He tries very hard and does generally mean well, but struggles a very lot with his own copious mental health issues. Has somehow progressed to being the rakish uncle of at least several children? Currently runs Denny, which is lifeaftr's sole eatery, and a carpentry place.

THE DRIFTER is from an indie game called Hyper Light Drifter. Silent, blue-skinned wanderer who communicates via sign language and/or a little bobbing sprite thing that hovers by their shoulder and projects text. They're suffering from an incurable terminal illness and are technically just dying in slow motion, but in general they're here to help!! They will happily teach sign language to anyone who asks.

AGENT WASHINGTON is from a web show called Red vs. Blue, which is a halo-based machinima about colorful space marines thats funny until it stops being funny and starts being really fucking sad. in general, he's pretty dependable in a crisis, is a highly accomplished killer, and has a hell of a Traumatic Past. but he's getting better, kinda. he has a tigerlily that wasn't supposed to be his, and actually has it a lot less together than he seems because people from home are a BIG CONCERN

Current plans:

TIM still runs Denny, which is LifeAftr's one and only restaurant. Let me know if you wanna work there! We can handwave if you want, or if you want some good establishing threads for nascent CR that definitely flies for me too. I try to get a Denny mingle up once a month if possible, unless extenuating circumstances make that unlikely or unnecessary. He also has finally established a carpentry nearby, if you need any woodcarvin done!

THE DRIFTER is recovering from last month's age event that involved hurting some of their close cr YET AGAIN. time to come to terms with being a synthetically engineered war machine. yeah. they didn't like that.

WASH is probably gonna be helping his buddy Maine build a gym (he just kind of ended up getting roped into this it's fine) and other than HE HAS A LOT TO TALK ABOUT wrt to people learning his first name if u met him when he was teeny. he's not happy about that.

- LILLIE is a young runaway from the Pokemon Sun/Moon games, taken from the point where she's in the process of being kidnapped. So she's been double kidnapped, I guess? Anyway, she's been here for quite some time and has been hanging out with Guzma in their shared shack and avoiding new islands like the plague, since the first time she encountered a new island, it WAS the plague! She's grown quite a bit, mentally and emotionally, but is still a kid.
- GOBBET is a dumpster fire teenage shadowrunner from the game Shadowrun: Hong Kong, her and her pet rats have been taken from the day after the final mission. She's lowkey paranoid, highkey reclusive, easily bored, and often times just trying to make it day to day. That said, she's liable to branch out more as time goes on because god fucking damn it is she bored to tears. There's like zero crime to be done here. Survival is great and all but it's kind of boring and predictable as far as she's concerned.

Current plans:
-LILLIE is planning a mock pokemon battle with Guzma, but is otherwise open to helping newcomers adjust and generally making new friends. Her world is kinda small, I'd love it to widen!
-GOBBET needs to get out there and make some connections. She can usually be found in her shack or at the temple when things go wrong or get weird. Come find her or be found by her or whatever.

Current plans: All he's been doing is pretty much trolling people as a motorcycle (or tricycle, as of last month's event), and so I really need to get him out there doing other things! He's still pretty sure he's dead and I'm interested in playing around with that angle, too.

a teen vigilante superhero who grew up to be a burnout junkie. he's introduced to the series by checking out of inpatient rehab and literally minutes later overdosing and having to be resuscitated. he makes ONLY bad decisions and his impulse control exists only in the form of his brother ben. whos dead. long story.

Maine is a 24-year-old space marine from the 26th century who has minimal life experience outside of war. Personality-wise, he's basically a big ball of rage, determination, and loyalty wrapped up in a 7-foot-tall wall of muscle. In the words of the Counselor:

"A brute. Strong, unrelenting, fearless. He had no qualms when being asked to do the unpleasant, the morally questionable, because despite what many thought of him he knew he was, at his core, a soldier, and his actions inevitably served the greater good."

Maine is standoffish, lacks empathy for strangers, and is taciturn to a fault. This can initially make him difficult to get to know. He warms up to people once he can relate to them (e.g., finding something in common). His friendship is worth the effort: once he cares about someone, he'll literally leap in front of bullets for them.

Current plans: Maine is looking into creating a gym, bc that's just how he rolls. (GOTTA LIFT!!!) He's also pretty about people interacting with his younger self, sooooo there'll likely be some fallout from that. I'll be putting up an open log for both these things in the coming days!

Ben Hargreeves is a former ghost and one of seven children that were born on the same day, at the same time. They all have superpowers. Ben's is the ability to summon monsters (tentacles) through the portal under his skin. Unlike most characters, Ben will be utterly overjoyed that his powers have been nerfed. He is not overjoyed that he's alive? And has to take care of himself? Bullshit, honestly.

Connor Murphy is the plot spoiler character from Dear Evan Hansen. He grows the island's weed and he wants to die and stay dead, thanks. The only things he likes in life are memes and writing incredibly detailed yet useless pamphlets, which is absolutely fucking hilarious since he's got an insane amount of useful skill he nearly never tells people about.

Current plans:

Ben is new and mainly getting used to being alive again. Also making sure Klaus doesn't die. He's very invested in making sure Klaus doesn't die.

Connor is going to have a fucking conniption once he realizes what island everybody picked because he had a vision about it one time and universally he thinks that's probably a bad sign. Other than that he's chill and he owns a boat. Take him places, he's a lot more useful than he looks.

Permissions: Permissions here, most of it is your pretty standard fare but I would appreciate everyone checking out the last bit regarding Starflight's little trinket called a Dreamvisitor. Exactly what it says on the tin, it allows him to visit the dreams of other people and if you would rather he didn't please let me know. Also there's some dragon stuff about discussing topics like eating people or animals, if that's a thing you would rather not deal with (don't worry Starflight won't eat anyone).
Tell us about them: Your typical anxious teen nerd except he's a fire breathing dragon. He has a lot of issues with destiny and self-esteem and what it means when you're supposed to save the world but you're terrible at almost everything. He's been on the island about 2 months and honestly is not super thrilled about it but at least there's a library now.

Tell us about them: Jon is the Head Archivist of the Magnus Institute, an academic institution dedicated to researching the esoteric and paranormal. They are not - and they would like to make this clear - paranormal investigators; they are researchers dedicated to revealing knowledge of the unknown.

Jon is a somewhat stuffy and acerbic character, although he has softened due to recent events. He is awkward in the extreme with people he doesn't know (and often with people he does know). He is dedicated to his friends, kind of depressed, and also an Avatar of an eldritch abomination dark god of fear and knowledge which is slowly turning him into something Other. He's keenly aware of this and is not entirely sure what he's going to do.

He is driven by his patron to seek out knowledge and experiences. He also really likes cats, hates spiders, and tells excellent spooky stories (he also hates the word spooky). He could also really use a nap (it won't help him, but he likes to pretend).

Current plans: I'm brand new and shiny, so happy to have him meet anyone! Eventually he is gonna need to collect some Statements (stories of genuine supernatural encounters - preferably with a component of fear) from people or he'll get really sick.

She's a celebrated American astrophysicist whose last months on Earth were spent in a village in the English countryside. It's 1984 so a few MBs of data is A Lot! She's smart and passionate and can be pretty friendly but has been Burned badly by people so she can also be pretty cold. She's just had a transcendent experience with a noncorporeal alien light being (YEAH lmfao) so... she's gonna be adjusting. And waxing poetic now and then.

Currently she believes the Pattern (alien lightshow being and ... bae?) dropped her off here and y'all are on a journey to happiness or something.

I have a fairly mundane existence otherwise as a wife and mom. I'm also training for the first job I will have had in a decade so that's something new!
Character: Agent Texas from Red vs. Blue @ a_shadow
Permissions: You can find Tex's permissions post here. At Tex's pull point she was recovering from an injury and was just to the point where she was able to walk unaided, so she has a ways to go to get back to the level of fitness she would prefer. Also, she has invisibility on her armor and is likely to use it strategically if she needs to in order to win a fight.
Tell us about them: Tex is a combat AI who was placed in a human body in her previous game. ICly she struggles with the desire to use her robot instead—and unfortunately for her, she doesn't have access to it in LifeAftr. Therefore, she will go through some struggles with accepting her lot in not overworking or injuring her human body in her attempt to regain what she doesn't have here. Otherwise, Tex has a special connection to another AI who is in game, known simply as Church. I will likely be exploring her emotions in regard to him as well.
Current plans: So far I just want Tex to meet people, including potential enemies, friends, or ship partners!
Anything else: I played the Director in the game last year, a character who was Tex's creator, so if your character had CR with him and it comes up that could be interesting to explore! Otherwise I mainly want a heads-up if your character has reason to know who Tex is.

Tell us about yourself: She/her. CEST. I’m an English Teacher who lives on the north coast of Spain and is currently trying to prepare kids for official exams. After four months of OH GOD WHY IS EVERYTHING HAPPENING AT ONCE things finally seem to be calming down a little. However, because of work, I’m a slow tagger who will backtag to the end of the world.

Character: Zidane Tribal atailoftwoworlds from Final Fantasy IX, the ninth installment of some JRPG series that nobody's heard of.

Note. Zidane likes girls. A lot. He’s got one girl back at home whom he intends to gather up the courage to confess to so he’s not going to be pursuing any relationship and has no interest in girls besides being friends with them. Still, flirting habits die hard and while I don’t intend for him to say anything worse than cheesy lines (or have him flirt with anyone who isn’t 16 or older – and that includes mentally) and possibly give misguided love advice to others, do let me know if what he says makes you too uncomfortable for whatever reason and I’ll accommodate!

Tell us about them: Zidane is an optimistic disaster a teenage thief who is cheerful, cocky, carefree and also kind of a flirtatious idiot when it comes to pretty women. He also has the motto “You don’t need a reason to help people” and will impulsively run to those in need, sometimes recklessly risking his life for it.

Despite all this, he’s smarter than he lets on and quite perceptive of others, being willing to be a big brother to people and listen to them and give his own insightful perspective although not to the point he is nosy enough to force people to open up. In spite of all this and even though he’s not a miserable person, Zidane’s not so good at talking to others when it comes to his own worries. However, recent canon developments have made him want to change this (although because he doesn’t know anyone here very well yet it might be a bit difficult to put into practice. But time and circumstances could help him loosen up. He’s very precocious for a kid but still a kid who’s learning so….).

Oh. And he’s from an artificial race and was created specifically to help cause war, chaos and wipe out all life on some other planet and the only reason he didn’t turn into a bloodthirsty murderer was what can be pretty much summed up as sibling jealousy. Nothing out of the ordinary here. Move along.

Current plans: Zidane is honestly very good any sort of CR. Have a teenage character who wants friends their age? Want an annoying kid who is not above trolling? Want someone who is massively loyal to you and won’t stand for their friends being hurt? Want someone who is good at playing big brother? Zidane is good at fulfilling all those roles. Want to do exploring, adventure and investigating stuff? Zidane is good for that too (although Mr. Let's Body Slam The Mysterious Sealed Door might not always be the most careful dungeon explorer in the team).

He also ended up with a pet lorby which he named Blank. Blank is a friendly and affectionate creature who also eats a lot so make sure you don’t have food with you.

Tell us about them: Shepard has been grappling with the fact that not only did she die a couple of months ago, she died because she was an idiot and got tricked, leading to her hurting other people in the process. It's thrown a lot of stuff at her to process and unfortunately that has caused her to isolate since she still has a lot of trauma left over from her canon. But that's where you, dear player, can come in!
Current plans: I need to get this girl out there again and out of her shell. In a perfect world she needs someone to help thaw out her heart and dig it out from under all that... trauma... but right now she just needs friends. Negative CR is of course welcome but right now it might not go too far since she'd probably just pull away. All in all, please, befriend her, bother her, let her take unnecessary risks and injuries to protect you from all manner of dastardly flora and fauna!

Tell us about them:
Frisk is a quiet kid with a bad knife who has been around the block a few too many times. As in, time travelling. Once an eleven-year-old child who incidentally saved an entire race of quasi-JRPG monsters, they're now a chronological pre-teen trying to figure out where the heck you go from there, really. They're CRAU'd from a now-closed game called Sol Raveh, and between that game and their canon they have a lot of stuff™ going on, but they're sweet as they come and a vicious memelord to boot.

Arthur is a cowboy from 1899, but the bad kind. The kind that shoots and robs people. He's also a gentle soul trapped in a big and mean man who never knew any other life, and he's trying to turn his morals around properly after discovering he's super ill. He's a gruff, sour fella, but it's easy enough to get to his soft side - so long as he doesn't think you're a lowlife like he is. In his spare time he likes to draw animals and flowers and pet horses and he honestly just has no idea what's going on around him most of the time.


Current plans:
Frisk is coming off of an extended hiatus this month alongside their Partner in Time, Chara, and it's going to be a soft reset for them in a few ways; they'll be pretty dang behind on what's been happening around here. Thus, they're in the perfect place to reconnect old CR and strike up new CR - I'm open and I'd love to ease them back into things properly!

Arthur is going to be confused out of his mind because he died from Fucking Tuberculosis and this place isn't nearly as fiery as he expected it to be. UHH HONESTLY I'm ready to just throw him into things, but one of my priorities is possibly getting him treated properly for his TB, otherwise he'll probably just die from it again soon lmao. Other than that he's more or less given up the robbin' life so rest assured he'll have pretty low interest in any of that business right now. Tell us about them:
Tachibana: Went from being a lab-nerd researching immortal life for his company that he somehow didn't realize was up to No Good to being a monster-fighting transforming hero who tried hard and failed harder to being a hollow shell of his former self once that was over. Then he wound up in Syn where he was forced to deal with some of his issues, lived a bunch of other AU lives, wound up immortal himself, reunited with half the people he'd lost in canon and adopted a sidekick pokemon/digimon knockoff who's basically a small child version of himself in his armor. He's still a hot mess who's prone to knee jerk reactions, yelling, stubbornly refusing to change his mind while other people are in the room (and then doing so the second they leave...) but also has a huge soft spot for kids and is still a giant nerd at heart. Ask him about anything medical or biological in nature (or motorcycles) and watch him go~

So far in LA he's been mostly spending time with Sayoko because she's not dead and kinda just being around. Vague plans of starting up a mechanics shop because tinkering and because he misses his motorcycle and knows how to build a steampunk/magic powered one. (He also knows how to build a hoverbike but those parts are a biiit out of his ability to fabricate here.)

Bakura: A nerd of a different sort, this kiddo loves the occult and games and would have an huge collection of ouija boards if he didn't need the space for all his TRPG minifigs and dice. He also had a brief stint at Syn where he made friends with Discworld!Death and a bunch of video game characters and came to the conclusion that all fictional worlds are real somewhere (which is the most awesome thing ever). He is the sort who will follow the will o the wisp in a heartbeat, fanboy at anything large, gross, otherworldly and/or threatening that clearly should be run from, will cheerfully talk about that one time he died and all the weird things that happened to him when he had the Sennen Ring and how he kinda misses that clearly cursed bit of black magic and all sorts of things that will make people wonder how it is it was only the one time he died....

Currently Bakura is.... uh... ... Around! Doing things! Mapping the island because of course he is.

It's hard to come out the other side of being murdered a couple of hundred times over in a continuous time-loop of No One Is Happy About This, but three years of LifeAftr and a prior stint in a game called Sol Raveh has had them cooling of their jets a little, leaning more into their meme loving nature, and being slightly more chill about people in general. He's a high school superhero-in-training, with a Superpower Of Great Importance that was passed down to him from his heroic idol, so, you know, no pressure! He's also just a huge superpower and superhero nerd in general, complete with borderline obsessive research. He's been here for a couple months and is honestly still amazed by the weird plants, weird animals, and the fact that nonhuman-looking people here can be actual for-real nonhumans. His idea of "normal human" is...more than a little weird thanks to coming from Superpowers For Everyone World.
Current plans: Izuku's going to be sliding into full blown Research Mode and will likely be functionally living at the library and taking so many blank books to write notes in. He's also got something halfway resembling a workout routine going, which includes doing laps around the housing islets at ass o'clock in the morning, if anyone wants to join and/or interrupt him. I'm planning to get a network post from him up soon (this weekend, hopefully) as he attempts to deal with that whole "wait, nonhuman-looking people here usually actually are not human?" issue.

Tell us about them: It's everybody's favourite 9'3" elderly Chinese doctor, Faust! When he's not embodying the soul of slapstick and accidentally being more of a cryptid than the actual cryptids are, he's delivering wisdom with the eloquence of a philosopher and saving people's lives - as far as he's aware, he's the only licensed medical practitioner on the island, so he taking his job here especially seriously.
He also runs the only clinic and infirmary on the isles, should you need patching up or wish to enjoy the zaniest bedside manner this side of the dreamscape.
Current plans: After everything that's happened the past month or so, I'm looking to get back into the groove of things, so expect plenty of toplevels and responses for the forseeable future!
